A violent shooting occurred this Monday June 22 in the city of Montreal, province of Quebec, resulting in three fatalities, including a police officer and a civilian, along with the alleged assailant who was shot by law enforcement. The incident, which mobilized a massive security contingent, also resulted in three injuries, specifically one civilian and two additional police officers.

The epicenter of the tragedy was the neighborhood of Côte-des-Neiges (CDN), in the west of the city, a strategic area characterized by the presence of numerous Jewish businesses and restaurants. According to police reports, the deceased civilian was a resident of this area frequented by the Jewish community, raising alarms about the ideological background of the attack.

The events began to unfold shortly before noon (16:00 GMT), when a witness alerted authorities by phone about the presence of a suspicious individual carrying a rifle. Images circulated on social media, although pending official verification by agencies, described the attacker dressed in military uniform and carrying high-caliber weaponry.

Following the operational deployment, the chief of the Montreal Police (SPVM), Fady Dagher, confirmed at a press conference that "The immediate threat has been neutralized". However, the human cost for the institution was high. Through its official channels, the police department stated: "With immense sadness, we confirm the death of one of our officers in the line of duty". It was also reported that another injured officer is out of life-threatening danger.

The political and social response was swift given the gravity of the incident. The Minister of Public Security of Quebec, Ian Lafrenière, stated to Radio-Canada: "For now, we do not know the motive behind all this", maintaining caution regarding the assailant's motivations.

The Center for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), a key institution in Canadian civil society, issued a statement informing that it is "closely monitoring the situation" and urged "community members to remain vigilant" in light of the terrifying event.

The mayor of Montreal, Soraya Martínez Ferrada, expressed her "sincere condolences to the family, loved ones, and colleagues of the officer who died in service".

The police operation, which included the closure of the nearby urban highway and a shelter-in-place order for residents of Côte-des-Neiges, lasted for just over three hours before being concluded. Meanwhile, the investigation remains open to determine if there are others involved in this assault that has shocked international public opinion.
