President Javier Milei led the closing speech of the 12th edition of the Latam Economic Forum this Thursday, where he reaffirmed the economic direction of his administration and launched harsh criticisms against the opposition and operating journalists.

The event, held at the Goldencenter hall in Parque Norte, in the City of Buenos Aires, brought together about 300 businesspeople, officials, and analysts, in one of the most significant meetings in the regional economic sphere.

During his presentation, Milei rejected claims suggesting a supposed lack of initiative from his Government and responded with irony: “The supposed government that has no initiative and is paralyzed, the other day in the Chamber of Deputies we won 13 to 0.”

The coup-plotting opposition

In this context, the president denounced maneuvers by the opposition aimed at destabilizing his administration. He claimed there was an attempt at a coup d'état in Congress with the goal of destroying fiscal balance, one of the central pillars of his economic program.

Milei also detailed that his administration faced seven impeachment attempts and the presentation of about 40 legislative initiatives against him, which resulted in an outflow of Argentine assets over the past year, due to what is termed "Kuka Risk."

Regarding the economy, the president defended the results achieved so far. While he acknowledged that inflation remains high, he assured that his Government managed to avoid a critical scenario: hyperinflation that “was traveling at one and a half daily.”

Additionally, he stated that the Argentine economy is growing at an annual rate of 5.5% and projected that the country will become an attractive destination for large investments, reaching investment grade status.

The media

Another focus of his speech was centered on criticism of media coverage. Milei described the treatment his administration receives from the press as “disproportionate and unjust attack.”

“Never in the history of Argentina has there been such a large spread between what is happening in the economy and what the media says,” he stated. In that vein, he asserted that his administration managed to lift 14 million people out of poverty after eliminating what he defined as the “managers of poverty.”

The president also recalled the “fear campaign” that took place during the elections, where unfounded accusations about his political program were spread. With an ironic tone, he expressed to those present: “Did anyone manage to trade an organ here?,” referring to one of the lies that had been circulated.

Economic projections

The closing of the speech was in line with the projections of the Minister of Economy, Luis "Toto" Caputo, who anticipated a deceleration of inflation in the coming months and expressed confidence in the electoral performance of the ruling party looking towards 2027.

In this regard, Milei anticipated that "Argentina is heading towards a scenario of lower inflation and greater growth,” and linked that process to the implementation of the Incentive Regime for Large Investments (RIGI) and its deepening.

“The next qualitative leap, once the numbers are ordered, is the release of increasing returns through deregulation,” he stated.

And he concluded: "When the State stops being a brake, companies scale up, productivity rises, and growth accelerates. That is what we implemented with the RIGI, what we will deepen with the SuperRIGI, and what we just sent to Congress.”
