The forward admitted that he doesn't consider the Olympic medals from 1924 and 1928 as World Cups and that Argentina has more

Luis Suárez found himself at the center of the football debate in his country after making a statement that clashed with a historic claim of Uruguay. Amid the discussion about whether or not to recognize the gold medals from the 1924 Paris and 1928 Amsterdam Olympic Games as world championships, the striker was blunt and broke with the traditional stance of Uruguayan football.
The controversy regained momentum following a recent FIFA post on social media, in which the organization displayed a ranking of world champions using the current official count: Brazil (5), Germany and Italy (4), Argentina (3), France and Uruguay (2), Spain and England (1). The absence of the two Olympic titles reignited Uruguay's demand for historical recognition.
When asked about it, Suárez left no room for interpretation: "We have two and we were awarded two more, but I don't count them," he said in a conversation with Juan De Montreal on TikTok. To emphasize his position, he added: "Argentina has more World Cups than Uruguay."
Para Suárez, Uruguay tiene 2 estrellas
His statements surprised many Celeste fans, who maintain that the Olympic achievements were the foundation of the prestige that led to the creation of the World Cup in 1930, which was precisely organized and won by Uruguay, and that they should be counted in the same way.
However, FIFA has never formally equated those achievements with World Cup championships, so the official record continues to show only two stars for Celeste.
A possible return to Nacional
In recent hours, a rumor has begun to circulate indicating that the "Pistolero" would leave Inter Miami to return to the club where he began his football career: Nacional de Uruguay. The striker had joined Las Garzas at the beginning of 2024 and gradually lost prominence, to the point of losing his starting position.
Suárez podría volver a Nacional
In this regard, Suárez would have decided to leave and would not renew his contract with the recent MLS champion, with Bolso as a possible destination to end his career. It is worth recalling that in 2022, after leaving Atlético de Madrid, the Uruguayan had a brief stint with his beloved team before moving to Gremio in 2023.
