Luka Romero: between world champion Argentina and tiny Mexico
The Mexican naturalized Argentine had already been drafted for the U-20 with the Albiceleste, but he hasn't played with the senior team yet, so he still has a chance to defend the Tri
Since Lionel Scaloni took over as head coach of the Argentine National Team, he stood out for giving opportunities to players who weren't among the usual names on the team. Several of them managed to take advantage of that chance and earn a place in the squad. However, not everyone had the same luck. Some were left out of the drafts, and now a midfielder who was part of the U-20 World Cup could represent Mexico's Senior National Team.
This is about Luka Romero, the talented 20-year-old midfielder who became the youngest player to debut in Spanish LaLiga. His good performances earned him a draft from Scaloni to the Albiceleste. However, over time he lost his place in the coach's plans, and despite being part of the squad in the U-20 World Cup, his future could be linked to the Aztec team.

The national teams he could represent
The current Cruz Azul player has triple nationality: Mexican, Argentine, and Spanish. He was born in Durango, Mexico, is the son of Argentine parents, and lived more than ten years in Spain. This condition allows him to be eligible for all three national teams.
His strong bond with the Argentine youth teams, where he excelled in the U-20 World Cup, and his draft to the Senior Team during the double date of Qualifiers for Qatar 2022, in the matches against Venezuela and Ecuador, seemed to indicate that his future was with Argentina. He was even included in the pre-list for the World Cup that same year, although he ultimately wasn't part of the final draft. However, his absence in the latest drafts left him in an uncertain situation regarding the Albiceleste.

His decision
Due to the lack of continuity in the Argentine National Team drafts, it remains to be seen what will happen in the upcoming lists. Scaloni plans to open the doors to several young players after securing qualification for the 2026 World Cup, so Luka Romero could have a new opportunity. However, his future will depend on the decision he makes, as Mexico has renewed efforts to add him to their national team.
As if that weren't enough, the Cruz Azul midfielder still isn't entirely sure which country he will represent in the long term. "It's a decision I haven't made yet. Right now, I'm focused here at Cruz Azul, I want to have a good tournament, and then we'll see," he recently stated, amid the renewed interest from the Mexican national team, which, with Javier Aguirre at the helm, intends to add him to their ranks.
