Migration alert: half a million Bolivians could cross into Argentina due to the crisis
The figure would climb to more than one and a half million. Salta, due to its location, would be one of the main entry points
The deep crisis in Bolivia anticipates a massive exodus to Argentina, which is once again positioning itself as a regional stability hub. However, the arrival of thousands of migrants is causing concern in northern Argentina

The severe political, economic, and social crisis shaking Boliviathreatens to trigger an unprecedented migratory wave toward Argentina. Recent estimates anticipate that at least 500,000 Bolivian citizens could enter the country in the coming months, and the total number could exceed one and a half million between 2025 and 2027. The province of Salta appears as one of the main entry points, given its geographical proximity to the neighboring country.
The Argentine government, led by Javier Milei, is closely monitoring the migratory phenomenon in the region. Although the stability achieved by the current administration has improved the country's image compared to its neighbors, it is reiterated that the priority is Argentinians; an example is the case of Buenos Aires where state hospitals have begun charging medical attention to foreigners without an Argentine DNI, a measure also implemented in provinces like Salta, Jujuy, Santa Cruz, and Mendoza

The situation in Bolivia is critical. The country is suffering from food and fuel shortages, roadblocks, rampant inflation, and an acute energy crisis. The sustained decline in natural gas production, Bolivia's main economic driver for years, has destabilized its entire productive structure. Added to this is a marked shortage of dollars, which negatively impacts banking and commercial operations. The parallel dollar in Bolivia is already 70% above the official exchange rate.
Meanwhile, massive protests and blockades are recurring in key cities like El Alto and Santa Cruz, paralyzing daily life and pushing thousands to seek alternatives abroad. According to the 2022 National Census, almost 2 million immigrants already resided in Argentina, with Bolivia being one of the main countries of origin. The possibility of a new massive influx is causing concern in the northern provinces, which could see their health, education, and security services strained.
