Milei will seek to modify Argentina's legislation to reduce tariffs with the US.
During his participation in the American Patriots Gala, the president was honored with the 'Lion of Liberty Award.'
President Javier Milei participated in the American Patriots Gala, an event organized by the Make America Clean Again (MACA) and We Fund the Blue foundations. In that context, the leader announced that Argentina will adjust its regulatory framework to reduce tariffs between both countries.
During the ceremony, Milei was honored with the "Lion of Liberty Award", a recognition given to figures who stand out for their commitment to individual freedom, the free market, and conservative values.
The President's trip was recently finalized after receiving a direct invitation from the organizers. At the gala dinner, Milei was accompanied by the Minister of Economy, Luis "Toto" Caputo, the Chancellor Gerardo Werthein, and the Secretary General of the Presidency, Karina Milei.
During the event, the head of state was warmly applauded by the attendees. Upon taking the stage, he offered a brief but forceful speech: "For all these objectives and measures, the entirety of politics, the media, the unions, and many businessmen accommodated by the previous regime repeatedly said that the function was impossible".
"As a result of all the measures implemented. The growth from December 2023 to 2024 was 6%, which is why we lifted 20% of the Argentine population out of poverty", he emphasized. He added: "Our reform agenda continues because our country. Our goal is to be the freest country in the world".
In line with that vision, Milei announced that "Argentina will move forward in adjusting the regulations to meet the requirements of the reciprocal tariff proposals developed by President Donald Trump".
This decision arises from the meeting held by Chancellor Werthein with the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick, where they began efforts to mitigate the impact of the new taxes on Argentine exports.
On this point, Milei also announced: "Within the framework of the TIFA, we will advance in harmonizing the tariffs of a basket of about 50 products so that they flow more freely between our two nations".
He also emphasized: "We have already met nine of the 16 necessary requirements, and I have instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Secretariat of Commerce of my country to advance in meeting the remaining requirements".
The President continued his intervention by highlighting the parallels between his administration and that of the Republican leader. "As you can see, we do politics with actions, not just words. And in that, we agree with President Trump. It's time to act, and we are committed to taking the necessary measures to solve the asymmetry with the United States in a short period," he stated.
Milei's participation in the gala was confirmed at the beginning of the week after receiving a signal from Trump's entourage indicating that the president would be present at the event and willing to have a brief informal meeting with the Argentine leader. The meeting is expected to take place in the coming hours, although nothing is confirmed.
