The Government of Javier Milei inaugurated this Friday in Mendoza the first permanent detachment of the Granaderos a Caballo, a historic event that took place at the Cerro de la Gloria.
The ceremony, held in Parque General San Martín, marked an institutional milestone for the region and strengthened the bond between Sanmartinian tradition and Mendoza's identity. The event was led by the Minister of Defense, Luis Petri, who arrived at the site accompanied by a reinforced security detail and a special traffic operation prepared to allow the deployment of the emblematic military corps founded by José de San Martín in 1812.

This is the third detachment of the regiment outside Buenos Aires and the fifth in the entire national territory. The new base is made up of 20 Granaderos, of whom 15 are from Mendoza and completed their specific training in Buenos Aires before taking up their duties in their home province.
According to the Ministry of Defense, the purpose of this unit will be to keep alive the historic legacy of the Liberator, participate in activities related to educational outreach, and accompany protocol ceremonies both in Mendoza and the region.
The installation of the detachment in Mendoza adds a new strategic point to those already established in Yapeyú, San Lorenzo, Casa Rosada, and Olivos. The decision to locate a headquarters in Mendoza responds to the symbolic and military value that the province holds in national history: from there, the Ejército de los Andes was organized, trained, and consolidated, playing a central role in the South American emancipation campaign.
Luis Petri highlighted this historical significance in the message he shared on his X account. "Today in Mendoza, the national capital of freedom, we took a historic step: the permanent return of the Granaderos, fulfilling President Javier Milei's commitment to settle an outstanding debt with the birthplace of the Sanmartinian campaign," said the minister, emphasizing the impact that the measure has on the province.

In his post, Petri also underscored the emotional and heritage component of the unit's return. "The new detachment honors the men who accompanied General San Martín and brings the Granaderos back to the land where the Ejército de los Andes was organized, trained, and prepared."
"Mendoza gave its body, effort, and dedication that made that epic possible. For this reason, this step is also a tribute to that immense legacy, a province that left an eternal mark on our history and our Homeland," the minister concluded.
With its formal inauguration, the new Granaderos headquarters in Mendoza becomes a space for historical and ceremonial preservation, strengthening the military presence linked to San Martín and consolidating the province's role as an essential site within Argentine history.
