An 18-year-old Chinese player lost his life in his country after suffering a severe head injury during a training session in Spain. Guo Jiaxuan fell into a coma on February 6 after receiving a strong blow to the head during a practice in Madrid, in which his Beijing Under-20 team and the Spanish Alcobendas participated. He was diagnosed with "brain death" at a hospital in Madrid before being transferred to China to continue his treatment.

Guo, who was part of the renowned Beijing Guoan's Under-19 teamand had joined China's Under-17 national team in 2023, recently passed away, according to the club. "We have lost a son who loved soccer. May Jiaxuan rest in peace!" the institution posted on its social media. According to various local media, his death occurred on Wednesday night at Beijing's Tiantan Hospital, after his health condition worsened. His passing took place one day before he would have turned 19.

"The club will continue to do everything to properly handle the aftermath and provide all necessary help and support to Jiaxuan's family," added Beijing Guoan in its statement. The young talent had been selected to be part of the FC Bayern World Squad, an annual Bayern Munich program aimed at discovering new talents internationally. "The club's thoughts are with his family and friends," expressed the prestigious German team in a message of condolences.

According to the AFP agency, the circumstances that led to the player's injury have not yet been clarified. His family has accused the Beijing Football Association of concealing information about the incident and not maintaining contact with them. They have also demanded access to the match recordings and details about the care Guo received before being hospitalized, as well as information about his medical insurance. The family "only wants truth and justice," stated the young athlete's brother on social media.

Meanwhile, the Beijing Football Association communicated that it had avoided disclosing information about the incident to "prevent irrelevant personnel from interfering with the medical work and out of consideration for the family". It also indicated that it obtained images of the match and convened a team of experts to analyze them.
