With the end of the year just around the corner and the transfer market about to reopen, at River preparations are already underway for a departure that seems imminent: that of Ignacio "Nacho" Fernández, who appears to be one of the players most likely to leave Núñez. This Sunday, a major step forward was confirmed for the midfielder to return to Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata, the club where he was developed and from which he emerged into professional football.
For years, returning to Lobo was a recurring wish in every transfer window, but it was always put on hold because Marcelo Gallardo kept him in the starting line-up or, at least, as a valuable asset. However, everything changed in the second half of 2025, when the midfielder lost his place due to inconsistent performances and his departure began to seem inevitable.
According to information from journalist César Luis Merlo, Nacho's return to Gimnasia is well on track. There have already been direct talks with the player and he has shown genuine interest in returning to El Bosque after 10 years. At 35 years old, with no place in Muñeco's starting eleven and after a year in which his level dropped significantly, the midfielder intends to keep competing and to regain the continuity he was not having at Millonario.
