Neighbors challenged the municipality over illegal street closures in Villa Allende

They rejected measures that restrict circulation and report that the municipality ignores court rulings

A demonstration took to the streets of Villa Allende on Thursday in rejection of the absurd gates and closures imposed by the municipality. The march was called by Self-Organized Residents and included sectors such as merchants, taxi drivers, "naranjitas," and environmental groups. The starting point was Plaza Manuel Belgrano, from where they proceeded through the city center.

The protest united sectors that rarely come together, reflecting the widespread discontent with these arbitrary measures. Even environmentalists who at one time blocked the construction of Luchesse Avenue to protect a tree joined in against this measure. The reason is that they recognize it doesn't protect anyone and directly undermines freedom of movement.

This street closure not only fragments the community but also avoids the real problem: insecurity. Instead of pursuing and imprisoning criminals, residents are being locked in. The municipal policy, justified by a discourse of protection, ends up causing more inconvenience than solutions.

A protest with diverse and common demands

The demonstration reached the municipal headquarters, where each sector voiced its complaints. Environmentalists, taxi drivers, and merchants reported that the measure harms their daily work. Strikingly, even the "naranjitas" pointed out that the restriction prevents many "clients" from reaching the areas where they provide their already prohibited illegal service.

Residents reiterated that they never endorsed the opposition registry implemented by the municipality, which is currently being challenged in court. They indicated that the ordinance lacks legitimacy because it conflicts with current judicial rulings. "They haven't endorsed or participated in the opposition registry implemented by the municipality, since it is being legally challenged along with the entire ordinance."

The protest also targeted the authorities' lack of institutional respect. They accused the municipality of "disobedience and abuse of authority" for failing to comply with rulings ordering the suspension of the measure's implementation. The demonstrators demanded that the law be upheld and real solutions be sought against crime, instead of locking up law-abiding residents.
