Netflix used artificial intelligence to make 'El Eternauta' and explains why
Netflix confirmed that it uses generative artificial intelligence, and El Eternauta was the first series to take advantage of it
Netflix has confirmed the use of generative artificial intelligence to improve and streamline the production of original content.
The first series where this technology was applied was El Eternauta, an Argentine fiction that has become a pioneer within the platform's catalog.

Why did Netflix start using artificial intelligence?
The announcement was made by Ted Sarandos, co-CEO and chief content officer of Netflix, during the presentation of the financial results for the second quarter of 2025.
According to his explanation, the decision was mainly economic. In a scene from El Eternauta, recreating the collapse of a building in Buenos Aires with traditional visual effects was far too expensive.
Instead, generative AI made it possible to achieve a similar result much faster and at a lower cost.

Results: faster and cheaper
Thanks to this technology, they managed to complete that sequence up to ten times faster than with traditional methods, without sacrificing quality.
For Sarandos, this is an "unbelievable opportunity" for creators to make better movies and series, although that statement still raises doubts.

A real improvement or just a budget cut?
Netflix has been adding productions with mixed results. For this reason, some critics point out that this bet on AI responds more to a need to cut costs than to a pursuit of quality.
Nevertheless, the company insists that it doesn't replace artists with machines but rather provides them with new creative tools.
Beyond visual effects
Artificial intelligence is also being used in other areas:
- Shot preview and planning.
- Personalization of the user experience.
- Optimization of the search engine and advertising.
