Days away from competing in a new World Cup with the Argentine National Team, Lionel Messi received a new recognition in his career full of achievements. The Rosario native was chosen as the winner of the 2026 Princess of Asturias Award for Sports, an award given annually by the Princess of Asturias Foundation to individuals with outstanding careers and social impact.

The decision was made by a jury chaired by former Paralympic swimmer Teresa Perales and composed of twelve specialists, who selected the Argentine captain from 27 nominations from 12 countries. In justifying the choice, the jury highlighted "his dazzling talent, his exceptional sports career, and his formidable and ongoing charitable work to promote access to education and healthcare for the most disadvantaged children".

Additionally, it noted that Messi "has also earned the respect and admiration of all for his exemplary behavior on the field and for his consistency, humility, and commitment to collective play". The recognition also focused on the work of the Leo Messi Foundation, created in 2007, which promotes projects related to education, health, and social inclusion for children and young people in vulnerable situations.

In this way, Messi became the first football player to receive the Princess of Asturias Award for Sports individually. Previously, the world champion teams Brazil (2002) and Spain (2010), and the duo formed by Iker Casillas and Xavi Hernández in 2012.

On the other hand, the Argentine succeeds the American former tennis player Serena Williams, winner of the 2025 edition, and joins a list of prominent figures in world sports that includes names like Rafael Nadal, Fernando Alonso, Steffi Graf, Michael Schumacher, Pau Gasol, and Carl Lewis, among others.

It should be noted that the award ceremony will be held in Spain and, as is tradition, the award includes a sculpture designed by Joan Miró, a diploma, a badge, and a monetary award of 50,000 euros.
