The Secretary of Nuclear Affairs of Javier Milei's Government, Federico Ramos Napoli, responded to the criticisms from Kirchnerist legislator Jorge Taiana and expressed his views on the Argentine nuclear development, questioning the arguments presented by the deputy in a recent opinion column about the OPAL reactor.

Through his X account, Ramos Napoli directly targeted Taiana for dedicating more than 600 words to the OPAL and the Argentine nuclear sector without mentioning the RA-10, the direct successor of the reactor exported by INVAP to Australia.

“Deputy Jorge Taiana wrote more than 600 words about the OPAL and the nuclear sector without mentioning the RA-10 even once: the direct successor of the OPAL, more powerful and whose construction we are finishing in this government and on Argentine soil,” stated the official.

The secretary questioned the deputy for presenting a scenario of underfunding in the nuclear sector without mentioning that the Argentine project recently received a significant budget boost.

“The omission is not a mistake: if he mentions it, the main thesis of his note disappears,” asserted the official, who added: “You cannot denounce 'underfunding' and admit in the same text that the heir of the reactor he celebrates received a budget boost of 65 billion pesos last month to complete its construction in 2027.”

The contrast between the OPAL and the RA-10

Ramos Napoli also focused on the construction times of both reactors. He noted that the OPAL was designed, built, and put into operation in just over six years, while the RA-10 has taken more than 15 years since the project began.

“Entire governments have passed, including those that Taiana was part of, and no one finished it,” questioned the Secretary of Nuclear Affairs.

In this regard, he stated that the administration of Javier Milei received a project that was stalled and made the decision to concentrate resources to advance towards its completion.

“President Milei's administration found a stalled project and decided to focus resources to finish it and develop a sustainable business model in line with the reactor,” affirmed Ramos Napoli.

The official also listed the uses that the RA-10 will have once completed, including the production of radioisotopes for medicine, silicon doping for the electronics industry, and the use of neutron beams for research.

“Radioisotopes for medicine, silicon doping for the electronics industry, and neutron beams for research: the same market that Taiana admires in Australia, we will be able to capture with local production and our own export capacity,” he stated.

The clarification about the origin of the OPAL

Ramos Napoli also questioned how Taiana presented the link with the OPAL reactor and recalled how that international project was realized.

“One more fact for the record: INVAP won the international tender for the OPAL in 2000, competing against Siemens, Technicatome, and AECL,” he wrote.

The secretary added that the contract was signed in July of that same year and emphasized that it occurred five years before Taiana took office as chancellor.

“In fact, the government at that time was of a different political color. Taiana only appeared in the photo of the commissioning of a project that others won and carried out,” concluded Ramos Napoli.

With his response, the official exposed Taiana's falsehood about the current situation of the nuclear sector and presented the RA-10 as a concrete example of continuity and funding for nuclear development during Milei's administration.
