San Lorenzo quickly defined the replacement for Gustavo Álvarez. Following the surprising resignation of the coach at the beginning of the preseason, the management reached an agreement with Iker Muniain, who will return to the club to start a new phase, now from the bench.

The former Spanish midfielder will travel to Buenos Aires in the coming days to formally assume the position. Although the signing of the contract and its duration still need to be formalized, both parties have already agreed on the economic conditions and the sports project that the new coaching staff will promote.

This will be Muniain's second experience at San Lorenzo. After retiring from professional football in mid-2025 wearing the blue and maroon jersey, the Basque began his coaching career at CD Derio, a team in the fifth tier of Spain, where he came very close to achieving promotion.

Now he will face his first major challenge as a coach in charge of a First Division club, in a complex context both sportingly and institutionally.

The resignation of Gustavo Álvarez surprised the management just as the preseason began. Although his tenure was brief, the coach managed 13 matches, with a record of three wins, seven draws, and three losses, in addition to 12 goals scored and 10 conceded.

With Muniain's arrival, San Lorenzo will have its third coach so far in 2026. Before Gustavo Álvarez's tenure, the team had been led by Damián Ayude, who left the position in March.
