The controversy over the legislative history of Myriam Bregman has once again put a key vote in the Chamber of Deputies under scrutiny. On November 23, 2016, the then-deputy of the Left Front voted against a reform to Law 24.660, which sought to restrict prison benefits and parole for those convicted of serious crimes against sexual integrity.

That vote, known in public debate as the law for effective imprisonment for rapists, was approved by a large majority. However, 69 deputies decided to reject it. Among them was Bregman, accompanied by legislators from Kirchnerism, the left, Libres del Sur, socialism, and other allied spaces.

The information circulated again after the tragic outcome of the case Agostina Vega, after sectors of the left attempted to establish a moral discourse on gender violence and security. However, legislative records show that several of their leaders voted against a rule that tightened access to benefits for those convicted of sexual crimes.

Among the 69 negative votes are leaders from across the national left spectrum. The list includes Myriam Bregman, Máximo Kirchner, Andrés “Cuervo” Larroque, Eduardo “Wado” de Pedro, Juliana Di Tullio, Mayra Mendoza, Luana Volnovich, Héctor Recalde, Nilda Garré, Victoria Donda, Margarita Stolbizer, Néstor Pitrola, and Soledad Sosa, among others.

The official record also noted a subsequent observation: José Luis Gioja, who appears on the list of absentees, vocally expressed his negative vote. In the same section, Mario Negri expressed his affirmative vote. Additionally, among the absentees are prominent names from national politics, such as the then-deputy Axel Kicillof, now the governor of Buenos Aires, and Elisa “Lilita” Carrió, a historical leader of the Civic Coalition.

Years later, many of those same sectors try to present themselves as moral leaders in the area of women's and victims' protection, while official and historical records show how their work has always been directed in the opposite direction: towards the protection of common and sexual criminals.
