The story of Argentine football has just added a new record. Aitxuri Isasmendi, forward for El Cañón, needed only three seconds to score against Nación, in the Marplatense League, establishing the fastest mark recorded in an official tournament with film backing.
The goal came practically from the locker room. As soon as referee Ariel Mustafá blew the whistle to start the match at the Mario Della Torre stadium, Isasmendi noticed that the local goalkeeper was off his line and decided to shoot directly from his own half. The ball sailed over the goalkeeper and ended up in the net for the unexpected 1-0.
The 21-year-old attacker not only opened the match in an unusual way but then scored again to give his team a 2-1 victory, a result that also allowed them to stay at the top of Zone C with perfect points.
The play, however, was not solely the result of improvisation. Isasmendi revealed that he had already discussed with his coach the possibility of taking advantage of the advanced position of one of the opposing goalkeepers. "My coach and I had talked about another goalkeeper who steps up, and that when the match starts I could try. I tried once at the beginning of the year, and it hit the crossbar. This time I saw him off his line and told my teammate to let me. When the referee blew the whistle, I shot right away", he explained in an interview with Olé.
