OpenAI could launch its first wireless headphones this year and fully enter the hardware business. The project, which is still surrounded by secrecy, would seek to compete directly with one of Apple's flagship products.
The information comes from a recent leak that quickly caused buzz in the tech world. The focus is on a disruptive design and strong integration with artificial intelligence.

An unprecedented design and a strong bet on audio
According to leaker Smart Pikachu, who shared the details on X (formerly Twitter), OpenAI is working on headphones with the codename "Sweetpea". The leaker claims that they will have a never-before-seen design, very different from the classic format of current earbuds.
The main body would be metallic and shaped like an "oval stone," while inside it would house two pill-type modules. These would rest behind the ear, in an unusual arrangement for this type of device.
Next-generation chip and voice control
One of the most striking details points to the heart of the product. According to the leak, OpenAI would seek to integrate a 2-nanometer chip, similar to those used today by high-end smartphones.

It is even mentioned that the preferred supplier would be Exynos. The goal would be to enable advanced voice actions, replacing typical iPhone interactions through smart commands, in the style of a proprietary assistant.
A premium product that would not be cheap
The report also warns that the manufacturing cost would be very high. The bill of materials (BOM) could be comparable to that of a mobile phone, which suggests a high final price.

Regarding the launch, Smart Pikachu indicates that OpenAI is targeting September as the initial window. The sales projection would be ambitious: between 40 and 50 million units in the first year.
Part of a broader hardware strategy
These headphones would be only one of the five hardware devices that OpenAI would have in development. According to the same leak, the company would have commissioned Foxconn to prepare all these products.
Among the devices on the table, a home device and a kind of smart pen are also mentioned. For now, OpenAI hasn't officially confirmed any of these plans.
