Following the recent visit of Javier Milei to Peru, during the presidential inauguration of Keiko Fujimori, Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno provided definitions regarding Argentine foreign policy and the President's role on the international stage.

In a conversation with Eduardo Feinmann on the program Someone Has to Say It (Radio Mitre), the official also addressed the diplomatic situation with Brazil and referred again to the display of the flag over the Falkland Islands during the 2026 World Cup.

Regarding this last episode, Quirno was emphatic in dismissing any conflict with the United Kingdom and supported the players. “There is no diplomatic crisis with the United Kingdom. The flag states a truth. We have nothing to apologize for,” he asserted.

Additionally, he explained the context of the event: “What may have upset the United Kingdom is the amplification given by the place and the moment it occurred. It was a spontaneous act of a flag thrown from the stands and the players unfolded it. There is no additional intention beyond that.”

In that same vein, he added that days before the match between Argentina and England, he summoned the British ambassador to the Foreign Ministry to deliver a note of protest regarding the passage of a British warship through the Strait of Magellan without prior authorization.

The International Projection of Javier Milei

During the interview, the foreign minister also analyzed the international projection of the President. When asked about his influence on global politics, he stated: “He is a global defender of the ideas of freedom.”

In this regard, he highlighted the relationship with the United States: “We have a strategic alliance with the United States, resulting not only from the affinity between countries but also from the personal affinity between Donald Trump and Javier Milei.”

Quirno emphasized that this positioning is observed not only globally but also in Latin America. “This is also due to Milei's leadership. It is not only reflected in the world but particularly in the region: he has supported the changes that are occurring,” he continued.

The Relationship with Brazil

Another central theme was the relationship with Brazil, in a context of growing tension following attacks against Milei by the regime of Lula da Silva. In this scenario, the foreign minister sought to reassure and dismissed any rupture of commercial ties. “There is absolutely no chance” of that happening, he assured.

He also contextualized the conflict within broader ideological differences: “We need to frame this episode within a series of episodes that have been occurring between Brazil and Argentina due to the political and ideological differences that Milei and Lula have.”

Finally, he also responded to opposition questioning regarding alleged interference in Brazilian politics. “Here we have moved from ‘one cannot influence the electoral campaigns of each country,’ and Brazil did it. Let’s forget about this government; at one point, the governments of Alberto Fernández and Bolsonaro also had a bad relationship. There is evidently a very marked ideological difference,” he concluded.
