Patricia Bullrich confronted Jorge and Mauricio Macri over the prisoners in the City.

The minister reminded them that the City has unfulfilled commitments and that it's time for them to take responsibility for their part.

The political tension surrounding security and the construction of prisons continues to escalate, with City and Buenos Aires Province exchanging accusations and attacking Javier Milei's Government.

The National Security Minister, Patricia Bullrich, replied firmly to the demands of Jorge Macri and Mauricio Macri, reminding them that the City has unfulfilled commitments and that it's time for them to take responsibility for their part.

The confrontation intensified after the Buenos Aires City Mayor demanded "a plan with a schedule" for the transfer of inmates to federal prisons, stating that "police stations are not prisons."

Mauricio Macri supported his cousin's stance and criticized the national Ministry of Security, to which Bullrich replied bluntly: "Commitments must be fulfilled. By not doing so, they created a problem and now want to shirk responsibility."

An unfulfilled agreement

Bullrich recalled that in 2018, during Mauricio Macri's presidency, the City signed an agreement to build a new prison in Marcos Paz in exchange for keeping the Devoto property. However, the construction was halted for five years.

Far from backing down, the minister made her position clear: the City must assume its responsibility in the penitentiary crisis.

"They took over the police, they took over the Devoto prison, but they expect the rest of the country to support their inmates," the minister recalled.

"Since your cousin started, we offered everything: sending inmates south, building modular units on SPF land. He didn't accept either," she noted.

Additionally, she challenged the Buenos Aires City Government to sign the transfer of the Federal Penitentiary Service: "Today, due to five years of neglect, they have accumulated more than 2,000 inmates. Sign the transfer and stop complaining."

"All provinces take responsibility for their inmates and prisons, it's time to stop funding festivals, sign the transfer, and do the same," she added.

Axel Kicillof joined the dispute, who, in his opening speech at the Buenos Aires Legislature, tried to differentiate himself by highlighting the supposed construction of prisons in the Province and once again criticizing Milei's Government.
