The stability of Mercosur is going through one of its most critical moments due to the diplomatic arrogance of the Brazilian leader, Lula da Silva. In a context of high fragmentation, where the bloc discusses vital issues such as export quotas for the agreement with the European Union (EU), the leader of regional socialism has decided to reopen historical wounds to attack the sovereignty of his neighbors.
The crisis reached a boiling point this Thursday, when the Paraguayan government decided to call for consultations and officially summon the Brazilian ambassador, José Antonio Marcondes de Carvalho.
The objective was to deliver a formal note of protest in strong rejection of Lula's statements, who in an act of irresponsible revisionism questioned the events of the War of the Triple Alliance.
This hostile attitude not only affects Paraguay, but also adds to the escalation of tension with Argentina under Javier Milei, creating a scenario of isolation for the South American giant under leftist leadership.
The focus of the conflict originated last Friday, during a visit by the Brazilian leader to the defense company Avibras Aeroco in the interior of São Paulo. There, Lula da Silva made a distorted judgment about the war conflict that occurred between 1864 and 1870, claiming that “one fine day, Paraguay decided to invade Brazil”.
These words, which ignore the complexity of the genocide suffered by the Paraguayan people, were interpreted as a direct offense to national honor.
In the face of this aggression, the government of Santiago Peña demonstrated exemplary patriotic firmness. The chancellor Rubén Ramírez was responsible for conveying the nation's non-negotiable stance:
“Rest assured that the government of President Santiago Peña and this national Foreign Ministry will always defend the highest interests of Paraguay in all areas”.
