Peru deployed the army after the Colombian flag was raised in Chinería.
Gustavo Petro's communists crossed the border and placed a Colombian flag on Peruvian territory
The Peruvian Army increased its deployment and its preventive patrols in the district of Santa Rosa, located on Chinería Island, at the Triple Border between Peru, Brazil, and Colombia, after communists associated with Gustavo Petro, the Colombian president, raised their country's flag on Peruvian territory.
Since the previous day, a military unit has been patrolling the main streets and the Plaza de Armas of this town, reinforcing the presence of the Armed Forces to ensure security in this highly sensitive border area.
During the morning, around 20 soldiers carried out protection duties at key points in Santa Rosa. These actions included identity checks on passersby as part of a surveillance and prevention operation ordered by the authorities.

This deployment takes place in the context of the upcoming visit of several State ministers, scheduled for the coming days. Although it was not officially confirmed, the possible presence of the President of the Republic in Santa Rosa is expected, which increases the need to ensure public order.
Meanwhile, the Coast Guard units of the Peruvian Navy maintain strict surveillance over the Amazon River, complementing the border security plan. River monitoring is key given the increase in the movement of people and vessels in this region.
Local authorities emphasized that these measures aim to preserve tranquility in Santa Rosa, which in recent days has received national visitors and tourists from Brazil and Colombia. Many use the Santa Rosa migration point as a connection before continuing to Colombian cities such as Leticia, Bogotá, Medellín, and Cartagena de Indias, taking advantage of more affordable fares for their journeys.

The current context at the Triple Border requires constant reinforcement of the state's presence, both through military forces and control operations, due to increasing mobility and the complexity of border relations in the area. This way, Santa Rosa works to maintain the security of its residents and the thousands of travelers who cross this strategic meeting point every day.
Tensions between Peru and Colombia
Daniel Quintero, a Colombian presidential pre-candidate and close to Gustavo Petro, claimed responsibility for raising the Colombian flag in Santa Rosa, located on Chinería Island in the Loreto region.
Through a video shared on social media, Quintero crossed the border and placed a national flag over three meters (9.8 feet) long on Peruvian territory, stating that "Santa Rosa is Colombia" and questioning Peruvian sovereignty over the island. In his message, he also referred to the loss of Panama and the San Andrés Sea, and stated: "I'm not going to allow them to take the Amazon from us."
Quintero explained that he raised the flag to "declare the island as Colombian territory" and accused Peru of trying to make Colombia lose its access to the Amazon River. He assured that, if he becomes president, he will "firmly" defend Colombian interests in this border area.
The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs replied through a statement, describing Quintero's action as unnecessary and harmful to peaceful coexistence between both countries. Peruvian authorities indicated that this type of gesture only distracts from the real problems faced by Peru and Colombia at the border.
