Peter Lamelas, a Cuban-born physician and close friend of President Donald Trump, was confirmed as the new United States ambassador to Argentina following the vote in the U.S. Senate.
The relationship between Lamelas and Javier Milei began at a dinner in Mar-a-Lago, Trump's residence, where both were present. Since then, the Argentine president and the newly appointed U.S. ambassador have maintained regular contact.
The new diplomatic representative, an associate of the Republican president, keeps a firm stance against the regimes of Venezuela, Cuba, and Nicaragua, in line with the geopolitical approach promoted by the White House under Republican leadership.

“Congratulations to Peter Lamelas on his confirmation in the U.S. Senate as our next ambassador to Argentina! The Embassy team eagerly awaits the arrival of Ambassador-designate Lamelas in Buenos Aires”, stated the official account of the diplomatic representation in Washington, confirming the appointment.
“If confirmed, I will remain firm against the malign influence of adversarial powers in the region, whether they are ambitious actors or authoritarian regimes such as Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, China, Iran, and others that seek to undermine democratic values”, Lamelas stated during his confirmation hearing in the U.S. Senate.
In addition to targeting the dictatorships led by Nicolás Maduro, Miguel Díaz-Canel, and Daniel Ortega, the future United States ambassador warned about China's advance and its role in Argentina and Latin America.
