Pope Leo XIV resumes traditions and revives the symbols of the papacy

One of the most important things is that he personally places the canopy on the new archbishops again

Since his first greeting to the world as Supreme Pontiff, Pope Leo XIV made clear his intention to revalue the historical symbols of the Petrine ministry through a series of gestures that have surprised and moved the faithful.

One of the most visible signs of this approach was his initial appearance on the balcony of the central Loggia of St. Peter's Basilica, where he wore the traditional mozzetta: a small red velvet cape with trim, full of history and symbolism.

This garment, which had been set aside during Francis's pontificate, represents both the pastoral authority and the compassion that should characterize the leader of the Catholic Church.

The return to these insignia was not merely aesthetic. Leo XIV reinforced the liturgical dimension of his pontificate through the use of the chasuble, a vestment that changes color according to the liturgical calendar, including one of deep symbolic value used by Saint John Paul II.

He also regularly used the stole and the pastoral staff in public celebrations, reaffirming the centrality of the sacramental signs in his ministry.

Another detail that caught attention in the Vatican has been his choice to wear white trousers under the cassock, in contrast to the black trousers worn by his predecessor. Although this is not a direct opposition, it is interpreted as a visual reaffirmation of the institutional identity of the papacy.

In the liturgical sphere, Leo XIV has also introduced changes aimed at recovering traditional practices. During his first Marian prayer in the Easter season, the Pope sang the Regina Coeli in Latin, surprising the thousands of faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square, who replied with emotion and applause.

Another decision that reinforces this return to the roots was his willingness to personally place the pallium, a white wool band adorned with six black silk crosses, on the new metropolitan archbishops during the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, on June 29.

This ceremony, full of symbolism, had been modified in 2015 to decentralize the rite. Leo XIV chooses to restore the direct link between the Pope and the archbishops, consolidating the centrality of the apostolic see.

The use of Latin and Gregorian chant was also present in the most solemn celebrations inside St. Peter's Basilica, giving new impetus to a more solemn liturgical aesthetic, which connects with centuries of ecclesiastical tradition.

Finally, in a gesture that highlights his appreciation for the historical spaces of the papacy, the Vatican confirmed that Leo XIV will spend the month of July at the Pontifical Villas of Castel Gandolfo, a practice abandoned since the beginning of Francis's pontificate.

This marks the Pope's return in more than a decade to this summer residence on the shores of Lake Albano, used by many of his predecessors as a place of rest, prayer, and reflection.

This way, these signs show a clear intention on the part of Pope Leo XIV to recover identity elements of the Catholic tradition.
