On an afternoon filled with tension and resilience, Los Pumas closed their visit to Edinburgh with a memorable victory over Scotland in the penultimate match of 2025 on matchday 3 of the Nations Series. Felipe Contepomi's team faced one of the most solid sides in Europe at the always imposing Murrayfield and had to overcome a tough start.

Just five minutes in, Juan Cruz Mallía was shown a yellow card for a deliberate knock-on, a situation that left the Argentine team outnumbered. The hosts did not waste the opportunity: Jack Dempsey scored the first try and Finn Russell converted to make it 7-0. Once it was back to 15 against 15, Argentina tried to respond, but Mallía missed a long-range penalty in the 23rd minute. Worse still, in the 27th minute, Ewan Ashman broke through the Argentine try line again, and Russell extended the lead to 14-0.

The second half began just as hostile. Once again, Ashman scored for Scotland and the gap seemed definitive. However, in the 9th minute, the sin-binning of Blair Kinghorn opened a window of hope. That was when Argentine leadership emerged: Julián Montoya closed the gap with a try, and Santiago Carreras added the conversion to make it 21-7. Moments later, Rodrigo Isgró broke through the opposing defense and reduced the score to 21-12.

A penalty from Russell stretched the home lead again (24-12), but from that moment on, Los Pumas took complete control. Pedro Rubiolo, Pablo Matera, and Julio Piccardo scored three consecutive tries that shaped the final 33-24, capping off a comeback of tremendous character.

With this win, the Argentine national team secured a seeded spot at the 2027 World Cup thanks to their position in the rankings:

  1. South Africa (93.06)
  2. New Zealand (91.35)
  3. Ireland (89.93)
  4. England (88.06)
  5. France (86.95)
  6. Argentina (85.30)

A streak that came to an end

The victory had added symbolic value, since Argentina had not won in Edinburgh since November 28, 2009, when they prevailed 9-6. Since then, Los Pumas had lost on their next four visits (41-31 in 2014, 19-16 in 2016, 14-9 in 2018, and 52-29 in 2022).

In addition, the Argentine team now has a total of five wins at Murrayfield: 1999 (31-22), 2001 (21-16), 2005 (23-19), 2009 (9-6), and 2025 (33-24). It is a year-end that reaffirms the growth and competitive strength of the national team.
