The purchasing power of private sector wages is the highest in the last five years.

The Minister of Economy confirmed it on his X account, where he shared a chart with the data

The Minister of Economy, Luis "Toto" Caputo, celebrated this Friday that the purchasing power of the registered private sector's average salary, in January 2025, reached its highest level in the last five years, according to official data cited by the official.

"The real average salary of registered private employment (SIPA) increased 1.6% m/m in January. 5% above the level of November 2023," Caputo posted on his official X account. This result implies that the purchasing power exceeded the levels that were present when President Javier Milei took office.

At the end of 2024, salaried workers' incomes experienced an average adjustment of 145.5%, a value that exceeded by 27.7 percentage points the inflation recorded in that period (117.8%), according to a report by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (Indec).

The salaries that increased the most during 2024 were those of informal workers, who saw a nominal increase of 196.7%, after, under the Kirchnerist government of Alberto Fernández, off-the-books employees had a very negative 2023, falling almost 100 points below the CPI of that year.

Regarding formal workers, the best result was achieved by salaried employees in the registered private sector, with an average adjustment of 147.5% (29.7 percentage points above the inflation of 2024).

Meanwhile, public sector workers experienced an average nominal increase of 119.3% during the year. Although this increase allowed them to surpass the inflation of 2024, it was not enough to compensate for the loss of purchasing power suffered in the previous year.

Regarding December, the data published by the statistics agency reveal that salaried employees had an average nominal increase of 3.1%, compared to a Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 2.7%.

Once again, unregistered private sector workers obtained the largest difference (6.8%), followed by formal private sector employees (2.8%) and public sector employees (1.7%). The latter were the only ones who lost against inflation in the last month of the year.
