With only one matchday left to play in the Clausura Tournament, the battle to remain in Argentine football's top division has reached its most dramatic point. Two relegations are still to be decided, and three teams are reaching the limit in a final matchday that promises intense emotions and heart-stopping endings.
Sunday's matchday brought relief for several clubs that managed to secure their place: Sarmiento, Atlético Tucumán, Gimnasia, Newell’s, Talleres de Córdoba, and Instituto have confirmed their continuity in Primera División for next season.
The focus is now on the three teams fighting to avoid relegation: Aldosivi, with 30 points, starts with a slight advantage but remains at risk. Behind, with 28 points, are San Martín de San Juan and Godoy Cruz, both required to win to keep their hopes alive. At the end of the final matchday, two of these three clubs will lose their place in the elite.
The fixture could not be more decisive: San Martín will visit Aldosivi in a direct duel for survival, while Godoy Cruz will host Riestra.
All relegation scenarios
On social media, people have already started doing the math and considering different scenarios in which each of these three teams survives, goes to a tiebreaker, or is relegated. One of them was user @MatiMow, who shared on X a table that explains the situation in detail:
La tabla de @MatiMow del descenso
According to what was published, Aldosivi would have the best chance of avoiding relegation, surviving in 5 of the 9 possible scenarios and going to a tiebreaker only if Godoy Cruz wins. Meanwhile, San Martín de San Juan would only stay in Primera in 2 scenarios and would go to a tiebreaker with Tomba if the latter beats Riestra. Finally, the Mendoza team is in the most complicated position, since it can only hope for a tiebreaker if there is a draw in the other match or if Verdinegro wins.
