'Resident Evil' returns to theaters: what changes in the new adaptation arriving in 2026
The director of the upcoming Resident Evil anticipates changes and seeks to capture the essence of the game, not to copy it
Resident Evil returns to theaters with a new adaptation, but this time it won't aim to strictly follow the video games' storyline.
Zach Cregger, the director chosen by Sony, promises a proposal with its own identity, conceived more as an experience than a copy.

A cinematic past full of stumbles
From Paul W.S. Anderson's saga to the most recent attempt with Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, the franchise hasn't managed to convince either fans or critics.
The previous films always strayed from the original canon, and almost never hit the mark with the game's tone or narrative.
Who's behind the new Resident Evil project
The director will be Zach Cregger, known for Barbarian and the upcoming Weapons, and he'll co-write the script with Shay Hatten, from John Wick 4.

Actor Austin Abrams is already confirmed as the lead in this new version, which is expected to premiere in 2026.
What the director says about the changes
Cregger clarified that he's a fan of the saga, but he doesn't intend to make a carbon copy adaptation: "I want to capture the experience of playing", he stated.

According to his explanation, he won't break the key rules of the universe, although not all fans will be satisfied with what they'll see on screen.
The filmmaker's intention is to tell a "captivating" story and achieve a solid film that stands on its own, without relying on fanservice.
