Riverreceived another harsh blow on the eve of a decisive week. Matías Viña suffered a tear in his right adductor and has been ruled out for the upcoming commitments of Eduardo Coudet's team, including the final of the 2026 Apertura Tournament against Belgrano from Córdoba.
The Uruguayan defender underwent medical tests after Monday's training at River Camp, where the muscle injury was confirmed, which will require between two and three weeks of recovery. Thus, he will also miss the matches against Red Bull Bragantino this Thursday and against Blooming on May 27 for the Copa Sudamericana.
The absence particularly impacts the coaching staff because Viña had been showing his best form since joining the club in the last transfer window. The full-back had been a starter against Rosario Central and took advantage of Marcos Acuña's absence to gain prominence in the team.
Viña will miss the final of the Apertura and the last two matches of the group stage of the Copa Sudamericana.
Now, with Huevo still nursing physical issues, Coudet loses an important option to face the final against the Córdoba Pirate and the end of the semester. The coach must decide whether to risk Acuña or improvise another alternative on the left side of the defense.
The injury also raised alarms in the Uruguay National Team, as the 28-year-old player aims to be part of the final list for the 2026 World Cup, which will start in less than a month. Although the recovery times would not exclude him from the World Cup, his physical condition will be closely monitored by the coaching staff.
Viña thus joins a long list of physical problems at River. Gonzalo Montiel, Aníbal Moreno, and Sebastián Driussi had already been ruled out for the final due to their injuries in the match against Canalla, while Agustín Ruberto also remains out of consideration at least until next year due to his anterior cruciate ligament tear in his left knee.
Viña's numbers at River
Since his arrival at the beginning of the year on loan from Flamengo, the native of Empalme Olmos has played 887 minutes wearing the crossband shirt, distributed over 14 matches, in which he did not score goals or provide assists and received yellow cards on 6 occasions and red cards for double bookings once.
