The leading candidate for deputy from La Libertad Avanza in the province of Buenos Aires, Diego Santilli, issued a forceful challenge to the ultra-Kirchnerist Jorge Taiana, the former left-wing terrorist who heads the Fuerza Patria list, inviting him to hold a public debate before the upcoming elections on October 26.
During a radio interview, Santilli was emphatic in his request and stressed the need to raise the level of political debate: “I call on Jorge Taiana to debate. Wherever he wants, whenever he wants, however he wants. Because we have to move away from personal debates and focus on debates about what province, what nation, and what country we want,” stated the leader.
The La Libertad Avanza candidate maintained that the country is going through a decisive stage and that Argentines must choose between continuing to look to the past or betting on the future. In that sense, he emphasized that the real focus of discussion should not be on the names, but on the country models that are facing off at the polls.
“We have to debate whether we want to return to 200% inflation, 54% poverty, daily roadblocks in the streets, and rampant insecurity,” Santilli questioned.

In this context, the head of the LLA list underlined that Congress needs more deputies and senators committed to the reforms promoted by President Javier Milei, mentioning among them labor modernization, a new Penal Code “to put an end to crime and mafias,” and a tax reduction to encourage investment and the country's development.
The call to debate, made less than three weeks before the elections, seeks to put forward the contrasts between the libertarian model and Kirchnerist decline, which are competing for political control in Congress.
The controversy with Jorge Taiana
For several days now, Taiana has been heavily criticized on social media for controversies related to his dark past, which he now tries to hide by presenting himself as the "moderate."
One of the criticisms is that the current Kirchnerist candidate was a left-wing terrorist in the 1970s. During those years, he was part of the Descamisados group, an extremist organization that later joined the Peronist Youth.
In this context, Taiana participated in the Montoneros attack, another left-wing terrorist group, which took place on July 4, 1975, at the bar "El Ibérico" in Buenos Aires.

A bomb placed in a bathroom by members of the group exploded, killing two people and injuring several others, all this in the midst of democracy. The apparent target was a naval officer who frequented the place, but who had not attended that day.
Taiana was arrested in June 1975 and remained in custody until 1982. According to press reports from the time, his arrest took place at his home along with his ex-wife, Inés Iturraspe, also a member of Montoneros, for possession of war weapons and explosives, prior to the attack on the bar.
Meanwhile, Taiana had multiple meetings with the Venezuelan narco-dictator Nicolás Maduro, an ally for him, who leads the so-called "Cartel de los Soles," one of the largest narco-terrorist groups in the world.
Currently, the United States government is offering a reward of up to 50 million dollars for information leading to Maduro's capture, the largest reward ever offered by the North American country.
