Lionel Scaloni confirmed changes and Otamendi's captaincy to face Ecuador
In a press conference, the Argentine coach analyzed the conclusion of the Qualifiers, praised Ecuador, and spoke about Messi, the future of the national team, and the Finalissima against Spain
Lionel Scaloni, coach of the Argentina National Team, held a press conference ahead of the match against Ecuador for the last round of the South American Qualifiers.
One of the most prominent topics he addressed was the final roster for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. "The percentage, I think today it's not appropriate to say it because I'm not sure. A lot of things can happen. We have a core group, everyone knows it. There are a number of players that is always the same," he stated.
In relation to this, the coach also spoke about Lionel Messi's future and assured that he has nothing to add beyond what the captain himself expressed: "I only know what he said and he's going to take this time calmly."

Looking ahead to the match against Ecuador in Guayaquil, the last of the South American Qualifiers, Scaloni highlighted: "We're playing against a team that has been doing things very well, first with Alfaro and now with Sebastián (Becaccece). It's one of the most important in the world and has great players." He also announced that there will be at least two changes in the starting eleven to give opportunities to other players who need more minutes.
Meanwhile, the coach reflected on the difficulty of the qualifying path: "It was complex, but we got through it. With the complexity of being world champions and everyone wanted to beat us. I want to thank them (the players) for what they did, to remember that moment."
He drew a comparison with the Qatar 2022 National Team: "They're very similar. In this one, young players emerged who can give us other options. A more vertical style, young players who are good with the ball. We have a clear balance. In terms of playing style, they're not different, but I think with this team we were able to reach another level because different types of players came in."
One of the most emotional moments was when he spoke about Nicolás Otamendi, who will play his last Qualifiers match and will wear the captain's armband: "With everything about Leo, we forget what he represents for us." He added: "He came to play injured, against his club's decision, and that says a lot. He's a very important player for us. He will be the captain against Ecuador."

Another topic he addressed was the Finalissima against Spain, with Uruguay as a possible venue and the date yet to be determined. "I have no idea. I just found out. I'm thinking about what's coming now and not much else." He also praised La Roja: "They're among the best and play a style of football that fans enjoy," the coach commented.
When defining his seven-year tenure with the National Team, the coach from Pujato stated: "Sense of belonging, playing without obligation, and respect for teammates, and just knowing they're football players. That's what we set out to do. It was achieved. Beyond winning. The rest you already know, I didn't do it."
Finally, regarding his relationship with Claudio Chiqui Tapia and his future after 2026, he concluded: "With the president, I have the best relationship. Informal talks are not a bad thing. It's good to talk about everything, but my focus is elsewhere."
