Justice sentenced Florencia Aranguren's murderer to 33 years.
The man who murdered the young Argentine woman in Brazil in 2023 received a sentence after a long and revealing trial
Carlos José de França, the murderer of Florencia Aranguren in December 2023, was sentenced to 33 years in prison. The crime, which shocked the community of Búzios, Brazil, occurred while the young woman was walking her dog. After a trial that lasted several hours, a popular jury delivered the verdict against the femicide.
Florencia Aranguren, a 31-year-old Argentine woman, had arrived in Brazil with the intention of starting a new chapter in her life. Just three days after moving to Búzios, she met her death while walking along a path with her dog, Tronco. On December 6, 2023, her body was found lifeless, with 18 stab wounds, in a secluded corner of the José Gonçalves neighborhood.
The trial held on April 9, 2025, at the Fórum da Comarca de Armação dos Búzios determined de França's guilt, who was arrested after being identified on the area's security cameras. The evidence against him was overwhelming: genetic traces of his person were found under Florencia's nails, indicating that the young woman had tried to defend herself. The prosecution had requested a 40-year sentence, but the final sentence was 33 years.

The family's moving reaction
Mariana, the victim's sister, expressed satisfaction with the sentence, although she acknowledged that it will never fill the void left by Florencia's death. "Justice was served, but it won't bring Flor back," she commented in an interview with Infobae. Although the case was difficult for the family, they felt supported throughout the judicial process by the group of prosecutors and the Brazilian Justice.
The accusation against de França was based on several key pieces of evidence, such as the bloodstains found on his clothes and the contradictions in his testimony. The man had tried to defend himself by claiming he had been hit on the head, but examinations proved otherwise. Additionally, investigators confirmed that his story of being elsewhere at the time of the crime was completely false.

In the security footage, de França is seen heading to the crime scene shortly after Florencia disappeared from view. Additionally, upon his arrest, the victim's dog reacted unusually, which reinforced the suspicions of his guilt.
The sentence closed a painful chapter, but the family made it clear that, although justice was served, they will never return to Búzios, as the memory of the horror they experienced will mark them forever.
