The president of Mexico described the footballer as 'sexist' for defending the traditional role of women in the home

Javier "Chicharito" Hernándezbecame the target of criticismfor expressing his views on the traditional role of women in the home, but the debate escalated when Mexico's president, Claudia Sheinbaum, decided to intervene publicly and question him harshly.
"It's a very sexist idea, honestly. Let's call it by its name," Sheinbaum stated, referring to the videos the forward shared on his social media.

Although she acknowledged that the former footballer "has represented Mexico at different times," the president emphasized: "I'm not trying to create controversy with 'Chicharito,' but it's important for all men to recognize women as people," implying that Hernández doesn't do so.
Instead of opening a respectful debate about different views on the female role, Sheinbaum chose to disqualify and attribute sexist intentions to a personal opinion expressed by the former player. "Women can be whatever we want to be. It's a relationship of equality," she concluded, making her unequivocal rejection clear.
Her statements were questioned by several sectors, who believe that the president took advantage of the controversy to position herself politically and attack a public figure for thinking differently. In addition, she was accused of not showing the same determination when facing other much more urgent social or economic issues.
What did Chicharito say?
It all began when Hernández shared a series of videos on Instagram expressing his critical stance on certain contemporary feminist discourses. "So, you want a provider man, but for you cleaning is patriarchal oppression? Interesting. The home isn't patriarchy, it's your temple," he stated in one of the clips.

Far from inciting hatred or belittling women, the forward presented his personal view on the value of the home and traditional bonds. However, he quickly became the target of reproaches from officials and athletes associated with feminism.
