In an unprecedented event, the Spanish government led by socialist Pedro Sánchez made the decision to remove its flag from the islets known as "El Bar" and "El Bahar," located in the Mediterranean Sea, very close to the Moroccan city of Alhucemas.
Also called the "Tierra" island and the "Mar" island, these small rocky territories had remained under Spain's symbolic control for more than twenty years. Their marking with the national flag had been a recurring source of diplomatic tensions between Madrid and Rabat.

The measure, which has not yet been officially explained by either government, has sparked speculation about a possible change in Spanish foreign policy regarding its positions in North Africa. It has not yet been confirmed whether this action is part of a bilateral agreement, a diplomatic de-escalation strategy, or simply an administrative act linked to other issues.
The historical context of this situation refers to the well-remembered Perejil islet crisis, which occurred on July 11, 2002. Back then, members of the Royal Moroccan Navy landed and occupied that small islet, which was interpreted by the Spanish government, then led by José María Aznar, as a violation of its sovereignty. Consequently, Spain replied with the "Romeo-Sierra Operation," a military action that allowed it to regain control without any fatalities.

Since then, in an attempt to reaffirm its presence in the region, Spain has maintained surveillance and symbolic presence on other islets in the area, such as "El Bar" and "El Bahar," considered strategic due to their location and proximity to the Moroccan coast.
The recent decision to remove the flag has caused concern among political sectors, who warn that Morocco could interpret it as a sign of withdrawal or weakening of the Spanish presence in the area.
