The Syrian Army foiled an ISIS attack against President Ahmed al-Sharaa.

An Islamic State terrorist cell was planning to assassinate him during a visit to the city of Daraa

The Syrian Army, in coordination with the Turkish intelligence services, managed to thwart an assassination attempt against interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa earlier this month, according to a recent report by Lebanese outlet LBCI.

According to the investigation, a terrorist cell linked to Islamic State (ISIS) was planning to attack Sharaa during his visit to the city of Daraa, in southern Syria, in early June.

The alleged leader of this cell, who resided in the region, was arrested by Syrian security forces just one day before the president's arrival, which allowed the plot to be foiled in time, the report added.

However, the Syrian Ministry of Information denied the reports about the assassination attempt through a statement released by the state news agency SANA.

In early June, another Lebanese outlet had reported that President al-Sharaa managed to survive two assassination attempts: one that occurred in March and another at the end of the same month of June, reflecting the growing climate of instability in the region.

Meanwhile, Islamic State (ISIS) intensified its rhetoric against the new Syrian president, whom they accuse of "turning his back on jihad." According to intelligence reports, the Islamic terrorist organization is reportedly trying to recruit angry activists from the group Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the former rebel faction led by al-Sharaa, to add them to its ranks.

The United States special envoy for Syria, Tom Barrack, also expressed Washington's concern for President Ahmed al-Sharaa's security earlier this month. According to his statement, although Sharaa was previously linked to al-Qaeda, since taking power he has shown signs of trying to approach Western countries, which may have made him a target for extremist groups.
