Eyewitnesses told the Swedish public broadcaster SVT that they heard several shots and saw people running in different directions to take cover. They also reported that a masked individual was seen fleeing the scene on an electric scooter, which triggered a large police operation in the area.
So far, it hasn't been confirmed whether there was one or more shooters, and the police continue to request information from the public to clarify what happened.
The central area of Uppsala was quickly cordoned off by law enforcement, who deployed a large security and investigation operation. Additionally, rail traffic in and out of the city was interrupted between 5:30 PM and 6:00 PM as a precautionary measure.
Subsequently, the police declared the event as a "special incident," allowing the use of additional resources and interagency coordination.

The attack occurred on the eve of the Valborg celebration (Walpurgis), a traditional Swedish festival marking the arrival of spring that gathers thousands of people in the streets of Uppsala, especially university students. This coincidence has caused deep concern for public safety during the festivities.
Swedish Justice Minister, Gunnar Strömmer, strongly condemned the act of violence, calling it "brutal" and assured that his ministry is in constant contact with the police and is closely monitoring the case's progress.
"What happened is of extraordinary seriousness," he stated, highlighting the impact this event has had at a time that was supposed to be a celebration for the city.
So far, the possible motive for the attack or additional details about the suspect(s) haven't been revealed. Authorities continue to investigate and have asked anyone with relevant information to contact the police.
