The Government of Peru, led by the right-wing Keiko Fujimori, announced on Tuesday the break of diplomatic relations with the regime of Iran, after denouncing the democratic deterioration within the country, the repression against protesters, the persecution of opponents, and the restrictions imposed by Tehran on international trade and navigation.

The decision was formalized through Official Communiqué 014-26 from the Peruvian Foreign Ministry, which justified the measure in the "unwavering commitment to respect international law and defend democracy" of the Peruvian administration.

Among the main arguments, Lima pointed out the internal situation of the Iranian regime and highlighted complaints made by various United Nations mechanisms related to the repression of peaceful demonstrations, restrictions on press freedom, discrimination against women and girls, and the persecution of political opponents.

The Peruvian Executive also questioned the severe restrictions imposed by Tehran and the disruption of international trade through the Strait of Hormuz recorded since March 2026.

It indicated that these actions contradict fundamental principles such as freedom of navigation and the right of passage through the straits used for international maritime transit, in addition to generating consequences on international energy prices and global supply chains.

Peru also "strongly" rejected that Iran encourages violence and an escalation of conflicts in the Middle East and pointed directly at the restrictions imposed by the regime on the work of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The communiqué recalled that inspectors from the international agency have been denied access to Iranian nuclear facilities on different occasions, hindering verification tasks aimed at preventing the production of nuclear weapons.

In light of this scenario, the Peruvian Government decided to formally break diplomatic relations with Tehran and assured that it will act in accordance with the provisions outlined in the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961.

The break, however, will not affect consular relations. Peru explained that it will keep those channels open to ensure the protection and assistance of its citizens and preserve the functions provided for in the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.

Finally, the Foreign Ministry confirmed that the decision has already been officially communicated to the Iranian regime through a diplomatic note sent via the Iranian Embassy in Ecuador, which operates concurrently in Peru.
