Andrés DePew obtained citizenship during the Trump administration and shared his story of effort, faith, and overcoming adversity

Born in Ibagué, Colombia, in an environment marked by poverty and violence, Andrés DePew grew up facing adversity from an early age. As a child, he walked barefoot through the streets asking for money, but he nurtured his dream of one day reaching the United States, something that seemed unattainable.

Years later, thanks to his effort and discipline, he managed to build his own business and become a U.S. citizen during the administration of Donald Trump, a goal that millions of people around the world long for.

At a ceremony held at Mar-a-Lago, DePew pledged allegiance to the flag of the United States and personally received congratulations from the president and the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio. According to his account, Trump took his citizenship certificate, smiled and said: “Welcome.”

The gesture, symbolic and simple, marked the end of a personal journey that took him from the streets of Colombia to one of the most emblematic places of American political power, also disproving the left's narrative about Trump, a president who doesn't hate immigrants but rather hates illegality.

Andrés DePew shared a message on his Instagram account that reflects the depth of that moment. “Yesterday I became a citizen of the United States, a moment of deep gratitude, reflection and faith. I had the privilege of leading the Pledge of Allegiance and officially welcoming more than 200 new citizens who, like me, now call this nation their home,” he wrote.

The new citizen also highlighted the importance of his partner's companionship, whom he described as “the person God placed in my life to accompany me in faith and with purpose.” Together, they celebrated this milestone at President Trump's residence, where DePew had the opportunity to share the news of his citizenship with the president himself and with the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio.

During the meeting, they discussed “the strong relationship between Colombia and the United States,” a bond that DePew described as especially significant “in these times.” The legal immigrant expressed his gratitude for the words of both Republican leaders, who congratulated him on his effort and his new status as a U.S. citizen.

His story, which he himself defines as a testimony of faith, perseverance and respect for the law, demonstrates that the so-called “American Dream” is more alive than ever. For DePew, his experience shows that when one works hard and follows legal paths, opportunities in the United States remain possible.
