The US thanked Milei for his 'strategic alignment' with Trump
Chancellor Gerardo Werthein met with United States Under Secretary of State Christopher Landau in Washington
In an international context marked by geopolitical tensions, authoritarian threats, and strategic disputes on the American continent, Argentina continues to consolidate its new international alignment under President Javier Milei. On Tuesday, Foreign Minister Gerardo Werthein played a key role in a meeting in Washington D.C. with United States Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, who emphatically praised the foreign policy direction adopted by the current Argentine government.
The meeting took place at the Department of State headquarters and represented strong diplomatic support for the libertarian administration. From the U.S. government, Landau—a central official in the new Washington roadmap toward Latin America—praised the "strategic alignment" of Milei's administration with the guiding principles of President Donald Trump’s international policy.

"Grateful for Argentina's strategic alignment to strengthen the Western Hemisphere. I thanked Foreign Minister Werthein for Argentina's support of President Trump's vision of peace through strength," Landau wrote on his official X account, making clear the harmony with Buenos Aires.
During the summit, sensitive topics on the bilateral agenda were addressed: defense cooperation, international security, regional strategy, free market, and institutional strengthening in the face of authoritarian threats that persist in Latin America. The Department of State emphasized that "Deputy Secretary Landau recognized Argentina's leadership in hemispheric and multilateral forums, and valued its contributions in defense, security, and regional development."
The Argentine Foreign Ministry detailed that mechanisms were discussed to coordinate actions in response to the institutional crisis in countries such as Venezuela and Nicaragua, as well as the impact of transnational organized crime in the region. In this regard, Werthein and Landau agreed on the need to strengthen democratic institutions through joint policies in international organizations, with the aim of supporting governance and continental stability.
Christopher Landau, with a distinguished diplomatic and legal career, has been a key player in shaping the United States' new hemispheric relations. His experience as ambassador to Mexico and his knowledge of the Latin American political landscape position him as a central interlocutor in this new phase of cooperation.

The ideological and strategic affinity between President Milei and President Trump is not new, but the meeting between Werthein and Landau formalizes and projects it at the institutional level. Since taking office, Milei has been categorical in his defense of the values of economic freedom, liberal democracy, and rule-based order, and has sought to link Argentina with the most dynamic poles of the West: United States, Israel, and Eastern Europe.
The meeting also made it possible to outline a roadmap for bilateral work on key issues such as capacity building in defense, energy security initiatives, and the promotion of free trade. Upcoming official visits will aim to deepen these agreements and consolidate what both parties already describe as a "renewed strategic relationship."
