On October 28, a part of football history will once again be within reach for collectors. Through Matchday Football Auctions, a site specializing in sports auctions, several items linked to Diego Maradona will be auctioned, including the jersey he wore in the final of the 1984 Copa del Rey, when Barcelona faced Athletic Club de Bilbao at Santiago Bernabéu.
That match, played on May 5 of that year, was marked both by the result (a 1-0 victory for the Basque team) and by the memorable fight that broke out at the end of the game. Tension between both teams had already existed: months earlier, defender Andoni Goikoetxea had fractured Maradona's ankle, one of the most serious injuries of his career.
When the referee blew the final whistle, the blows exchanged between players turned the final into a fielded battle. Maradona, beside himself, headbutted "Chato" Núñez and kicked Miguel Ángel Sola, who ended up lying on the grass. Amid the chaos, his jersey was torn from the collar down to the chest, as shown in photos from that time.
