The United States Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, recently reported that there were high-risk investment funds that bet against Argentina and recorded significant losses following the recent rise in the South American country's bonds and stocks.

In a message posted on his X account, Bessent stated that while these speculative funds tried to profit from a depreciation of Argentine assets, long-term investors, including mutual funds and pension funds, achieved significant gains.

"The hedge funds that attacked Argentine assets in recent months undoubtedly suffered major losses yesterday. The long-term mutual funds and pension funds that invest on behalf of American workers benefited," Bessent said in his message.

The statement from the Trump official comes in a context of negotiations between officials from both countries for the implementation of a financial assistance plan aimed at strengthening the reserves of the Argentine Central Bank and ensuring debt commitments. The Treasury Secretary himself recently stated that "all options are on the table" to support the Argentine government.

Trump's message

Following Bessent's statement, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, expressed strong support for the Argentine President, Javier Milei, whom he described as a "fantastic and powerful leader."

In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that Milei "has proven to be a truly fantastic and powerful leader for the great people of Argentina, advancing at all levels at record speed." The Republican president recalled that the Argentine president inherited what he described as a "total disaster" in economic matters, with high inflation, which he attributed to the previous Kirchnerist government's administration.

Trump emphasized that under Milei's leadership, the Argentine economy "has regained stability" and reached "a new level of prominence and respect." In that regard, he highlighted that the bilateral relationship between the United States and Argentina "has become a strong alliance" and attributed this rapprochement to the libertarian president.

"I look forward to continuing to work closely with him so both countries can continue on their unbelievable paths of success," Trump wrote. He also described Milei as "a very good friend, fighter, and winner," and concluded the message with a forceful phrase: "He has my complete and total support for reelection as president. He'll never let you down!"
