Democrats believe that regaining control of the House of Representatives would allow them to have greater influence over the federal budget and lead congressional committees capable of investigating the Republican administration.
An opposing majority in the Senate could also complicate the confirmation of officials and judges proposed by Trump, especially for federal positions of a lifetime nature.
The battle for the upper chamber remains open. In this election, a third of its 100 seats is up for renewal, and some of the most competitive races show narrow differences between candidates.
A poll from The New York Times and Siena, published on Sunday, placed Democrats ahead in seven of the races considered most competitive, although five remained within the margin of error.
More than 54 million Americans have already voted
The election also records a record early turnout, with more than 54 million Americans having already cast their votes before election day.
The campaign was accompanied by advertising spending close to $11 billion and significant participation from major private donors. Among them was Elon Musk, a political ally of Trump and one of the main proponents of the DOGE initiative, which promoted reducing the size of the state apparatus.
The campaign closure in Washington will be Trump's last opportunity to publicly defend his management before Americans define the new composition of Congress.
The result will have direct consequences on the president's ability to advance his agenda during the second half of his term. A Republican victory would maintain legislative control, while a Democratic advance would open a new scenario of political confrontation in Washington.
