The President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced this Sunday that U.S. forces carried out a new operation against a vessel linked to drug trafficking off the coast of Venezuela.
The attack took place Saturday night and is part of a broader offensive against criminal organizations operating in the Western Hemisphere, especially drug cartels.
Trump made these statements during a speech at the Norfolk Naval Station, next to the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman, where he praised the work of the U.S. Navy in recent anti-narcotics operations.
Although it was not confirmed whether he was referring to the attack announced Friday by the Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, the President emphasized that this new action was part of ongoing efforts to curb drug trafficking by sea.
"In recent weeks, the Navy has supported our mission to eliminate cartel terrorists on the water... we did another operation last night. Now we just don't find them anymore," Trump stated. "They're no longer coming in by sea, so now we'll have to start focusing on land, because they'll be forced to cross there."
These statements suggest a shift in drug trafficking routes, driven by U.S. military pressure in the Caribbean Sea and areas near South America. Trump celebrated that the cartels apparently are avoiding the sea as a transportation route, but he warned that this will require a new focus on land routes, where surveillance and intervention operations could now intensify.

The President did not provide additional details about Saturday's specific operation, nor about the amount of drugs seized, whether there were any arrests, or the type of vessel destroyed. It was also not clarified whether the attack was carried out directly by U.S. warships or by other allied units.
This announcement is part of the Trump administration's hardline policy against cartels and transnational criminal organizations, which he has aptly labeled as "terrorists." It also coincides with a time when the United States has increased its naval presence in the Caribbean, justifying the actions as part of the fight against drug trafficking and the defense of national security.
