This Friday, the government of Donald Trump stated that, under the leadership of Javier Milei, a strong and stable Argentina is the best scenario for United States interests.
The message was posted on X by the United States Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, after Argentina's repayment of the funds used in the currency swap agreement with the United States, and it combined economic definitions with political considerations about the region.
In the text, Bessent emphasized that the strategy promoted by Donald Trump's administration has a direct impact on Latin America. According to his statement, "President Donald Trump's policy of peace through economic strengthening is transforming Latin America in ways that prioritize the United States and surround this country with stability and prosperity." In that context, the official stressed that the stability of allied countries is a central objective of United States foreign and economic policy.

One of the main points of the statement was Argentina's role within that regional strategy. Bessent maintained that the country is going through a process of economic strengthening and political strengthening under the current libertarian administration.
"President Javier Milei continues to firmly fulfill the renewed mandate of the Argentine people in favor of economic freedom. Argentina has regained access to financial markets and has implemented encouraging changes in its monetary and exchange rate policy framework," he stated.
The Treasury Secretary also formally confirmed the repayment of the funds used in the currency swap. "I am pleased to announce that, as a reflection of its strengthened financial position, Argentina has quickly and fully repaid its limited drawing on the swap with the United States, so that the Exchange Stabilization Fund (ESF) currently holds no pesos," he noted. In that regard, he highlighted that the operation not only fulfilled its stabilization objective, but also caused economic benefits for the United States.

In one of the central passages of the message, Bessent made explicit the Trump government's approach regarding Argentina and the region. "Stabilizing a strong United States ally, and generating tens of millions in profits for Americans, is a major achievement of the "America First" initiative. Setting the course for Latin America, a strong and stable Argentina that helps consolidate a prosperous Western Hemisphere, is undoubtedly what is best for us," he stated.
Finally, the official reiterated that the operation was profitable for the United States Treasury and expressed positive expectations about the country's future. "To reiterate, the ESF has never lost money. Our nation has received full repayment, generating tens of millions of dollars in profits for the United States taxpayer," he indicated.
He concluded: "With Argentina's stabilization, markets are now covering the financial needs of the Argentine Republic under President Milei's visionary leadership... We look forward to continuing to enthusiastically support President Milei and Argentina."
