The conservative Janez Janša was elected as the new Prime Minister of Slovenia after winning a parliamentary vote that concluded with 51 votes in favor and 36 against, amid a political landscape marked by fragmentation and weeks of negotiations among various political forces. The leader of the Slovenian Democratic Party managed to form a right-wing coalition that allowed him to return to power for the fourth time and open a new political chapter in the European country.

The parliamentary session was conducted by secret ballot and reflected the strong polarization existing within Slovenian society. Although in the March legislative elections the leftist Robert Golob, leader of the Freedom Movement, secured one more seat than the SDS, he did not manage to gather enough support to form a government. This lack of agreements paved the way for Janša to consolidate a parliamentary majority alongside conservative forces and with the additional support of the right-wing party Resnica.

After being confirmed in office, Janša stated that he would seek to make Slovenia ''a country of opportunities, prosperity, and justice,'' where citizens can feel safe and accepted. The leader also emphasized that one of the priorities of his administration will be to strengthen the economy, modernize the state, and improve conditions to attract investments and generate jobs.

The return of the conservative leader to government represents a significant political change for Slovenia and consolidates the advance of patriotic and right-wing sectors within the European landscape. His supporters believe that his political experience and leadership skills will be key to facing the economic and social challenges that the continent is experiencing, especially in an international context conditioned by the war in Ukraine, energy tensions, and economic slowdown.

The new government of Janša

Janša had previously held the position of Prime Minister on three prior occasions: between 2004 and 2008, then between 2012 and 2013, and most recently between 2020 and 2022. His political career is deeply linked to the modern history of Slovenia.

During the democratic transition following the disintegration of Yugoslavia, he actively participated in the independence process and served as Minister of Defense, which gave him an image of an experienced leader close to the sectors advocating for national sovereignty.

The new government announced a broad package of economic reforms aimed at reducing taxes, simplifying administrative procedures, and promoting the growth of emerging companies linked to innovation and technology. The coalition agreement also includes the modernization of the pension system, measures to combat corruption, and a decentralization of powers to local governments.

''Our goal is for Slovenia to be a highly developed, competitive, and socially cohesive state, based on knowledge, innovation, equity, and quality of life,'' Janša stated during his address to Parliament. From the ruling party, they maintain that these reforms will strengthen the country's competitiveness and improve the living standards of the population.

On the international front, the election of the conservative leader was closely followed by major European leaders. The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, congratulated Janša and expressed her expectation to work together to strengthen Europe's security and competitiveness.

The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, and the President of the European Council, António Costa, also sent congratulatory messages and emphasized the importance of cooperation with Slovenia on issues related to continental security and the situation in Ukraine.

Janša's figure continues to generate great expectations among conservative sectors around the world. In recent years, the leader has hardened his rhetoric and shown a strong affinity with the political model promoted by former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, in addition to expressing strong ideological coincidences with the American president Donald Trump.

Janša also announced that Slovenia will move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and revoke the official recognition of the Palestinian state granted by the previous government. This measure represents a significant shift in Slovenian foreign policy and brings the new government closer to the positions defended by Israel and other conservative European sectors.

Janša has shown strong ideological affinities with President Donald Trump and has stated that he will move his embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
