The FIFA president, Gianni Infantino, came under scrutiny following a series of decisions that sparked criticism during the World Cup. One of the most discussed episodes was the annulment of the suspension of American forward Folarin Balogun, who was finally able to play in the round of 16 match against Belgium.
The measure generated strong backlash within UEFA, which considered that the resolution marked "a dangerous line" regarding the independence of disciplinary processes. In response, Infantino clarified that the decision was made exclusively by FIFA's Disciplinary Committee and denied any kind of intervention.
Several European national associations began discussions to present a candidate to compete with Infantino in the upcoming FIFA elections.
Among the mentioned leaders is Aleksander Ceferin, current president of UEFA, although various reports indicate that his priority would be to continue leading the organization that governs European football.
