The attack caused a large fire at a key Rosneft plant and reinforces Kiev's strategy of targeting the Russian oil industry.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine attacked during the early hours of this Sunday the Saratov oil refinery, one of Russia's most important energy facilities, in an operation that highlights Kiev's growing ability to strike strategic targets located hundreds of kilometers from the border and deepens its campaign against the infrastructure that supports the economy and military effort of the Kremlin.

The Ukrainian General Staff confirmed the attack through a statement released on social media, where it reported that units of the Defense Forces carried out an operation against the refinery and managed to cause a large-scale fire in the industrial complex. Hours later, images and videos shared by residents and local media showed dense columns of black smoke rising over the facilities, seemingly confirming the extent of the damage.

The Saratov plant, operated by the state oil company Rosneft, is one of the main refineries in the Volga region. With a capacity to process around seven million tons of oil per year, it produces gasoline, diesel, and other derivatives that, according to Ukrainian authorities, are used to supply Russian military logistics. For this reason, Kiev considers these facilities legitimate targets within its strategy to weaken Moscow's war capability.

Russian authorities acknowledged the attack. The governor of the Saratov region, Roman Busargin, reported via Telegram that there were damages to civilian infrastructure, although he noted that no fatalities were reported. The city of Saratov is located approximately 700 kilometers southeast of Moscow, a distance that underscores the range of the drones and attack systems employed by Ukraine.

The bombing occurred amid a new night of intense aerial clashes between both countries. The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed that its air defense systems shot down 216 Ukrainian drones over various regions of the country, including Briansk, Volgograd, Voronezh, Kursk, Rostov, Saratov, Krasnodar, and other areas near the Sea of Azov and the Crimean Peninsula.

Meanwhile, Ukraine reported having neutralized 212 Russian drones during the same day. However, Kiev authorities admitted that some projectiles managed to reach their targets. In the Chernihiv region, in the north of the country, one person died as a result of the attacks, while new damage to civilian infrastructure was reported in the Sumy province.

The governor of Saratov confirmed the news via the social network Telegram, and assured that no fatalities had been reported.

The attack on the Saratov refinery is part of an increasingly aggressive strategy aimed at striking the Russian energy sector. In recent weeks, Kiev has intensified its operations against refineries, fuel depots, oil terminals, and other facilities linked to the export and processing of hydrocarbons.

In mid-May, the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, had indicated that Russian oil infrastructures constituted one of the main targets of his country's long-range operations. As he explained then, the intention is to reduce the revenue that Moscow obtains from energy exports, a key source of funding for the war.

Recent history shows a sustained expansion of this campaign. Ukrainian drones attacked the Syzran refinery in the Samara region, causing a fire visible from kilometers away. Facilities in the port of Tuapse, on the Black Sea, and the military airfield Baltimore, in the Voronezh region, were also hit.

Zelensky had warned that Russia's energy infrastructures are one of the main targets of the Ukrainian armed forces.
Zelensky had warned that Russia's energy infrastructures are one of the main targets of the Ukrainian armed forces.

Some of these attacks have reached targets located more than 1,500 kilometers inside Russian territory, an evolution that has forced Moscow to reinforce its defense systems and has increased the sense of vulnerability in regions that until recently remained relatively distant from the direct effects of the conflict.

The offensive continued this Sunday with new reports of attacks inside Russia. The governor of the Kirov region, Alexander Sokolov, reported that a local company was hit by Ukrainian drones. Although he did not provide details about the nature of the facility or the damage caused, the incident once again highlighted the growing depth of Ukrainian operations and the expansion of the aerial front of a war that has already lasted over four years.
