The diplomatic efforts led by U.S. President Donald Trump have brought a decisive turn to the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, after Kiev and Washington reached a "common understanding" on the central points of the new and historic peace plan.
The breakthrough, confirmed by officials from both governments, marks the most significant progress in nearly four years of war and reinforces the role of U.S. leadership in the pursuit of a negotiated solution.
The plan, based on a 28-point U.S. proposal initially drafted by special envoy Steve Witkoff, was revised and refined after receiving input from Ukrainian and European authorities, under the coordination of Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

U.S. lawmakers emphasize that the current version presents a more balanced and viable framework, in contrast to the draft leaked last week. For Washington's allies, the redesign of the agreement demonstrates Trump's willingness to incorporate multiple voices and improve the document to ensure a sustainable end to the war.
The diplomatic dynamic accelerated next weekend, when delegations from the United States and Ukraine held intensive meetings in Geneva. Subsequently, U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll traveled to Abu Dhabi for meetings with Russian officials.
His spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Jeff Tolbert, described the talks as positive and closely aligned with the White House, highlighting the coordination driven by Trump.

Kiev confirmed that it supports the main elements of the agreement after the meetings in Geneva. Rustem Umerov, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, publicly thanked the "constant and determined" effort of the U.S. president to achieve a negotiated end: "We appreciate the productive meetings with the U.S. delegation and President Trump's strong efforts to stop the war," he stated.
Umerov added that Ukraine expects to complete the final steps of the agreement during an upcoming visit by President Volodymyr Zelensky to the United States.
Meanwhile, Trump announced that the plan has been "finely adjusted" thanks to the input from both sides, and ordered Witkoff to travel to Moscow to continue the dialogue, while Driscoll prepares a visit to Kiev. On social media, Trump stated that he expects to meet soon with Zelensky and with Putin, although only when the agreement is in its final stage.

Although the Kremlin stated that it has not yet received the revised version of the plan, Washington has maintained an optimistic tone. Moscow warned that it could object to substantial changes from the original draft, but U.S. diplomats believe that the new document offers greater opportunities for consensus without compromising Ukrainian interests.
In Europe, the announcement caused positive reactions. Several leaders acknowledged that the agreement constitutes the most serious progress toward peace in months. The "Coalition of the Willing," a group supporting Ukraine led by France and the United Kingdom, agreed with the United States to create a working group to accelerate the definition of security guarantees for Ukraine, a crucial element of the proposed framework.
Despite the differences that remain, the diplomatic momentum led by Trump has revitalized a process that many considered stalled. With Russian attacks and fighting still active on the front, the progress achieved next weekend represents a significant step toward a possible de-escalation after years of humanitarian and military devastation.
