Uncertain outlook at Unión: Kily González could leave after the match with Defensa

The Tatengue's coach isn't achieving the best results and would leave the position regardless of the outcome against Halcón de Varela

Cristián "Kily" González is on the tightrope at Unión. The adverse results, the team's irregular performance, and the harsh internal situation within the club are creating a very hostile environment that could end with the resignation or dismissal of the current coach after the match against Defensa y Justicia.

Last Friday, after the morning training at the Casasol facility, members of the board met with the Rosario coach to address short-term issues. The meeting was planned for that day, as after the defeat in Chile against Palestino, it was preferred not to speak "in the heat of the moment," thus avoiding misunderstandings or possible unnecessary tensions.

The management attributes multiple errors to Kily González's leadership, especially in the last semester, both for his decisions and his statements. Some directors even believe that his cycle should soon come to an end.

The coach's statements at the press conference, after the tough defeat in Chile, caused strong discomfort within the squad, as the coach completely blamed the players for the loss, seriously affecting the relationship with his team.

Everything bad with Unión today

The current sports situation, marked by a poor harvest of points and poor performances, puts him under constant evaluation. Added to this is that, unlike the previous transfer market, this time all his requests were fulfilled, spending about 5 million dollars on reinforcements. Additionally, the political year the club is going through also influences, with a very tense relationship between Kily and the red-and-white fans.

Currently, Unión is almost without chances of qualifying for the 2025 Apertura Tournament play-offs. Although the mathematical chances exist, it needs to win at least three of the remaining four matches and depend on other results. A possible adverse scenario, besides being eliminated, would be finishing last in its group, as it would affect the point total for the annual table.

Despite his departure being imminent, and Kily himself having hinted on more than one occasion that he is considering the possibility of leaving, there is still no official confirmation from either the coach or the institution.

The negative present in numbers

So far in 2025, Unión has played 14 matches, where it has achieved 4 victories, 2 draws, and 8 defeats. Among the victories, the most notable was against Cruzeiro in the debut of the Copa Sudamericana at home.

As for Kily, since he arrived at Tatengue, he has managed 77 matches, obtaining 25 victories, 25 draws, and 27 defeats.
