If there is any name in the world of tennis today that is associated with episodes as controversial as they are unusual, it is that of Corentin Moutet. In a new incomprehensible act, during his match against the Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina at the ATP 500 in Hamburg, the Frenchman surprised everyone by pulling down his pants in the middle of the courtand ending up in his underwear after losing a point.
The sequence occurred in the sixth game of the first set, when the Spaniard was leading 3-2. After a forehand winner from Davidovich Fokina, Moutet reacted with evident annoyance and performed the scandalous action in front of the astonished gaze of the judges and the audience present at the German stadium.
Far from engaging in the game of provocations, the Spanish tennis player avoided looking at the situation and remained focused on the match. He ultimately won with a double 6-4 to advance to the round of 16 of the tournament.
The tension had already become visible from the start of the match. Minutes before the scene that quickly went viral on social media, the current number 32 in the ATP ranking had vented his anger by throwing his racket against an advertising banner.
Moutet's Background
Moutet's behavior did not come as a complete surprise within the circuit, where the Frenchman has a extensive history of controversial episodes. In various competitions, he has had clashes with rivals, referees, and even spectators.
At the Argentina Open, he drew attention by asking for a soda in the middle of a match, while at the Masters 1000 in Madrid, he accepted a coffee offered from the stands by a fan. He was also disqualified in Adelaide after insulting a referee and received a financial fine following an altercation with Adrian Andreev in Orleans.
One of his most remembered moments occurred in 2020 during an exhibition at Patrick Mouratoglou's academy. There, he completely lost his composure: he kicked his racket, threw it into the stands, and even insulted Apostolos Tsitsipas, father of Stefanos, in the middle of a discussion.
These types of attitudes are recurrent in Moutet.
More recently, at the ATP 250 in Marrakech, he again had a tense moment after losing to the Argentine Marco Trungelliti. After breaking several rackets during the match, he turned to the stands to confront a spectator whom he accused of provoking him.
At just 27 years old and with recognized talent within the circuit (he had reached 31st place in the ATP ranking last November), Moutet continues to alternate good sports results with behaviors that often overshadow his performance. What happened in Hamburg has once again added to a history that, tournament after tournament, seems to add a new chapter.
