Uruguay wants to host the 2026 Finalissima between Argentina and Spain
The continental champions already have an approximate date to play the second edition of the cup, which for now doesn't have a confirmed venue
After many negotiations, the Finalissima 2026 between Argentina and Spain already has a defined window on the calendar: it will be played between March 17 and 25 of that year. The only thing left is for the venue of the event to be confirmed, which will feature the champions of the Copa América 2024 and the Euro 2024, respectively.
Although United States, Qatar and Saudi Arabia were the initial options, Uruguay has emerged in recent hours as a strong candidate. The Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) is working for the match to be played at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, in what would be the last official match before the renovation works for the 2030 World Cup.

The idea carries strong symbolism: the Finalissima would serve as a tribute in the stadium that hosted the first World Cup final in 1930 and will once again host a World Cup match in five years, before the action continues in Argentina, Paraguay, Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
Logistics are already underway to meet international requirements, as happened in the previous edition in 2022, when Argentina defeated Italy 3-0 at Wembley.
The only confirmed detail of the Finalissima: the date
During the 75th FIFA Congress in Asunción, the presidents of the federations, Claudio "Chiqui" Tapia (AFA) and Rafael Louzán (RFEF), reached an agreement for the match to be played in the third week of March 2026, less than three months before the World Cup.

The only obstacle that could prevent the match from taking place on those dates would be if Spain has to play the play-off to qualify for the World Cup, something that will only happen if it finishes second in its qualifying group. In that case, the Finalissima could be postponed or canceled, since the federations don't want to play it so close to the start of the World Cup.
